The most important early history was the Annales of Elizabeth by William Camden (1551-1623). Working under the patronage of chief minister William Cecil, Lord Burghley, Camden had access to Burghley's papers and sometimes to the queen's as well. The resulting book is a savvy insider's account of the politics of the reign.
