Creating History

The history of Elizabeth's reign was initially written by those who knew her first hand. Other historians had the benefit of hindsight in assessing her achievements. Later historians focused their attention on religious issues and on Elizabeth's interactions with her chief ministers and her Privy Council. Recently, historians have examined Elizabeth's upbringing and the challenges she faced as a woman ruler, drawing on her own writings.
