Mapping the French Empire in North America

A virtual exhibit based on selections from Buisseret, David. Mapping the French Empire in North America: An Interpretive Guide to the Exhibition Mounted at the Newberry Library on the Occasion of the 17th Annual Conference of the French Colonial Historical Society (Chicago: The Newberry Library, 1991).

OVERVIEW

In fall 2001, on the occasion of the opening of the new offices of the Quebec Delegation in Chicago, the Archives nationales du Québec and the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies and Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography formed a partnership, to make documents illustrating the historic French presence in the Americas available on-line. In 2003, the year that marked the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, the Louisiana State Archives also became a partner. We present here the Newberry's contribution to this project, a virtual exhibit culled from our popular Mapping the French Empire in North America exhibit catalog prepared by David Buisseret (now out of print). Note: images are supplied here only in black and white, although many of the originals are in color. Text is copyrighted by the Newberry Library.
