In his response to R. Doleman's book, John Hayward played it safe and dedicated An Answer to James VI of Scotland, who was already on his way to the throne of England. Hayward hailed him as the only plausible successor to the incomparable if difficult Elizabeth. Previously, Hayward had been imprisoned by Elizabeth for his Life and raigne of King Henrie the IIII, dedicated to Essex.
