Mary Stuart and Norfolk
When Mary Queen of Scots arrived in England, in disgrace, Elizabeth ordered an investigation into the murder of Lord Darnley, Mary's husband. Though no verdict was reached, Queen Elizabeth kept Mary closely guarded. Eventually, Mary was moved to Fotheringay Castle where she stayed under a home arrest for the rest of her life.
Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, was the leading aristocrat in England and expected to control the young Elizabeth. When he could not, he plotted to wed Mary Queen of Scots and restore Catholicism to England and Scotland. The plan collapsed, and Norfolk's supporters staged an armed rebellion. He was convicted of treason and executed in 1572.
