Writing after the death of Mary Queen of Scots, the Jesuit priest Robert Parsons (1546-1610) identified the eldest daughter of King Philip II of Spain, the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, as the best Catholic candidate for the throne of England. Parsons clearly knew the danger of his actions, and thus published his book abroad. Parsons even used a pseudonym to protect himself from persecution and dedicated his book to Essex, perhaps to stir up trouble for the ambitious Earl.
