In the early nineteenth century, the historian John Nichols (1745-1826) scoured archives to assemble his account of the ceremonies of Elizabeth's reign. Nichols was among the first historians to realize that these apparently frivolous events were an important part of the mythology of Elizabeth as Gloriana. His book remains a gold mine for scholars to this day.
