Sir Philip Sidney embodied the spirit of the Renaissance in his skill as a poet, courtier, and soldier. In his work of prose fiction, the Arcadia, Sidney described the deeds of two young princes who undertook trials and adventures to win the hearts of their ladies. Sidney's early death was lamented by admirers both in England and on the Continent.
