After political persecution forced him to leave Germany in 1851, he moved to America and eventually settled in Chicago, where he served as the longtime editor of the German-language Illinois Staats-Zeitung (Illinois State Newspaper).

Lenore Raster Aasgaard (1899-1987) was Hermann's granddaughter. Although only a second-generation American, this photo album from her teens and early 20s shows her thoroughly at home in the U.S., traversing the country by steamboat, automobile, and horse-drawn carriage.
