A Fallen Friend

Ten days into the war, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a close young friend of Mary and Abraham Lincoln was shot while trying to capture a Confederate flag in Alexandria, Virginia. Per Lincoln’s order, Ellsworth lay in state at the White House and Mrs. Lincoln placed this commemorative portrait on his casket during the funeral services. The first Union army officer to die in the war, Ellsworth was a much-celebrated hero in the North.
