Abraham Lincoln in Chicago, Alexander Hesler, February 28, 1857

On the Rise

On February 28, 1857, while in Chicago tending to legal matters and Republican politics, Lincoln sat for the photographer Alexander Hesler. Beforehand, Lincoln combed his unruly hair with his fingers, creating the tousled look. Lincoln considered the image “a very true one; though my wife and others do not. My impression is that their objection arises from the disordered condition of the hair.” This is an engraved copy of the photograph.
