"'Uncle Sam' Making New Arrangements," Currier & Ives, 1860

Lincoln Goes to Washington

Shortly after Lincoln’s election, Currier & Ives issued a cartoon that summed up the outcome in a humorous manner. The central figure of Uncle Sam has found a new tenant for the White House, which the current president, James Buchanan, is vacating. Meanwhile, Lincoln’s opponents (Bell, Breckenridge, and Douglas) have arrived too late.
