Political Debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, 1860

Publishing the Debates

A few days after losing the senatorial election to Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln compiled a scrapbook of the debates as they appeared in Chicago’s Republican and Democratic newspapers. Republican leader Oran Follett of Ohio secured the scrapbook and published the speeches in time for Lincoln’s 1860 presidential campaign. More than 30,000 copies sold in a few months. Lincoln presented this copy to James C. Conkling of Springfield, a close friend and political ally.
