Letter from Lincoln to Stephen A. Douglas, July 31, 1858

Arranging the Debates

Lincoln’s brief note to Stephen A. Douglas agrees to his terms for a series of seven debates to be held later that summer and early fall. Although Douglas took four openings and closings to his three, Lincoln consented, thus finalizing the arrangement. Lincoln concluded by suggesting that their letters about the debates appear in next Monday’s Springfield newspapers. The debates were held in Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy, and Alton.
