Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn (1507-1536) was a member of the Howard family, and her uncle was the powerful Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Anne spent several years at the French court as a young woman and was educated there with the daughter of the French king Louis XII. Anne was renowned for her dark hair, sparkling brown eyes, and quick wit.
