In his history of the Protestant Church, Actes and Monuments, John Foxe (1516-1587) describes Elizabeth's imprisonment in the Tower of London during the reign of her sister Mary.

Foxe had fled to safety in Germany and Switzerland in 1553 when Mary I began her burnings of those she considered heretics. There he assembled his account of Mary's atrocities, which was first published shortly after Elizabeth came to the throne. The powerful narratives and striking woodcuts gave the book an extraordinary hold over public opinion.
