In his reply to Knox's 1558 diatribe against women rulers, Aylmer (1521-1594) compares the new queen to the Biblical figure of Deborah, who rescued her people. His work was sponsored by Elizabeth's government, and he was later named Bishop of London. Still, Aylmer's support is lukewarm: he approves of women rulers only when they have been chosen by God and are guided by the advice of prudent men like himself.
