Dancing at the Château de Saint-Crépin
Soissons, June 1921
Modern print of vintage sulfur-toned silver prints

These dramatically backlit photographs were shot at a celebration inaugurating a sports field on the grounds of the Château de Saint-Crépin, near Soissons. The American Committee invited athletes and dancers to perform before a local audience and special guests. This troupe, clearly inspired by American dancer Isadora Duncan, brought the latest in modern dance to rural Picardy.

“You can’t imagine what joy it is to see things beginning to come out in the midst of all this desolation and destruction.”
Anne Morgan, 1919
