Newberry Transcribe

Family Life in the Midwest: Letters

Transcribe letters drawn from the Newberry’s Modern Manuscripts Collections, a repository of American manuscripts from the mid-18th through the 20th centuries. Though new collections are added often, the majority of letters currently on this site were penned by members of a multi-generational immigrant family, the Everetts, who crisscrossed the country and settled in South Carolina, Kansas, and beyond. These letters provide first-hand accounts of everyday life in America during the late 19th century.

Learn about the Everetts, read more about this project, view our transcription guidelines, access the Modern Manuscripts Digital Collection, or simply select an item below to get started! Optional: create an account in order to track your progress as well as that of other users.
