"Battle of Buena Vista," Carl Nebel, 1851

New Vistas

At the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847, U.S. troops under General Zachary Taylor defeated a much larger Mexican force under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna near Monterrey, Mexico.

Thousands of American troops saw the dramatic and arid landscape of this region for the first time during the war. The majority of Americans at home gained their impressions of Buena Vista and other wartime battles from illustrations by the nation’s first eyewitness war correspondents.
