"Annexation," Democratic Review, John L. O'Sullivan, 1845

Manifest Destiny

In this Democratic Party journal, an 1845 article by editor John L. O’Sullivan on the annexation of Texas invoked God’s blessing and coined the phrase “manifest destiny” to describe the U.S. goal of conquering the continent to the Pacific Ocean.  O’Sullivan criticized other nations for trying to thwart U.S. expansion, “checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.”
