Presidential Elegance

As president, Lincoln enjoyed the trappings of office, including an elegant black coach purchased by his wife, Mary Todd, in New York City a few weeks before the inauguration. A matched team of black horses pulled the vehicle, which bears a discreet “AL” monogram on each door. Mrs. Lincoln continued to use the coach while she lived in Chicago following her husband’s death.
