Robert Todd Lincoln, Mathew B. Brady, 1862

Lincoln’s Eldest Son

During the war, Robert Todd Lincoln attended Harvard University and spent little time at the White House. He briefly served in the Union army toward the end of the war and he was at his father’s side when he died. Afterwards, Robert lived with his mother in Chicago and became a successful lawyer. He also served as secretary of war under presidents Garfield and Arthur and as president of the Pullman Palace Car Company.
