Miniature oil portrait of Lincoln, G. S. Hayward, 1861

A Fresh Set of Whiskers

This portrait of Lincoln is based on a photograph taken by Christopher S. German in Springfield on January 13, 1861. Both images show Lincoln sporting a fresh set of whiskers, grown at the suggestion of eleven-year-old Grace Bedell. She had written him the previous October, before the election, suggesting he grow out his whiskers to look better and please all the ladies who would encourage their husbands to vote for him.
