Watch and chain presented to Lincoln, c. 1860

Gifts for the New President

The Illinois State Journal, a staunch Republican newspaper in Springfield, presented an elegant gold watch to Lincoln upon his departure for Washington, D.C.; the front cover is engraved with his initials. The top hat reportedly belonged to Lincoln, but when he reached New York City en route to his inauguration, an enterprising hat maker presented him with a new model in exchange for this one.
