A Union Debacle

On May 1-4, 1863, General Joseph H. Hooker and the Army of the Potomac clashed with General Robert E. Lee’s troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. Hooker’s ineptitude led to a major Union defeat with more than 17,000 casualties. When Lincoln received the bad news, he cried, “My God! My God! What will the country say! What will the country say!” Hooker resigned and Lincoln replaced him with General George G. Meade.
