"Uncle Sam's Happy Family of Generals," March 1863

Mocking the Generals

A satirical view of northern leaders depicts a silent General Ambrose Burnside, recently dismissed after the Fredericksburg debacle, flanked by Generals William T. Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant, arguing over who will succeed him and his predecessor, General George McClellan. In the background, Lincoln is reminded of “a little joke” while a Confederate officer captures a Union ship with a complete set of signal codes on board.
