Preying on Racial Fears

Printed in response to the enlistment of black soldiers, this cartoon preys upon the racial fears of many nineteenth-century Americans. A black Contraband cat seems ready to pounce on the white cat, Jeff, who is trying to topple Abe out of the Union liberty cap. On hand is a bottle of Lincoln Blackstrap molasses, with directions to take one dose immediately and another on January 1, 1863.
