View close-up

In 1599, John Hayward (1564-1627) published a history of Henry IV, with a lavish dedication to the Earl of Essex. Elizabeth suspected that Essex wished to follow the example of Henry Bolingbroke (1367-1413), who deposed Richard II in 1399 and took the throne as Henry IV. The Newberry's rare copy contains the controversial dedication to Essex, which was suppressed a month after publication.
