After the death of Norfolk, Mary Queen of Scots remained imprisoned in Fotheringay Castle, trying to negotiate or murder her way out. Mary's French secretary Lord Nau (flourished 1574-1605), wrote diplomatic and evasive letters to Robert Beale (1541-1601), the secretary to Elizabeth's Privy Council, but negotiations went nowhere.
