The young queen is pictured as a serious woman dressed in black. Her right hand holds a watch, in a rich golden case, while her left hand curves in an elegant, courtly gesture. The chair of state, rich textiles, and the sumptuous palace behind her all suggest her involvement in the world and willingness to govern.
