This revised translation of the Bible presented a moderate version of the Protestant Scriptures for Elizabeth's subjects. It was meant to replace the Latin Bible reintroduced by Mary I, and to compete with the Geneva Bible published by radical reformers who had gone into exile in Switzerland during Mary's reign. On the title page, Elizabeth is situated between Charity and Faith.
