The Courtier by the Italian humanist Baldassare Castiglione (1478-1529) was a conduct guide for ethics and social behavior. Castiglione's book was originally published in Italy in 1528 and quickly gained popularity in England. This volume is the first English edition of the work, translated by Thomas Hoby (1530-1566). Hoby was Elizabeth's ambassador to Paris when he died.
