William Cuningham's Cosmographical Glass is a treatise on mathematical methods for depicting the universe. Here, Cuningham (b. 1531) offers a view of the city of Norwich, the home town of the family of Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn. His detailed rendering shows a prosperous, well-built agricultural market town, circled in medieval fashion with a fine wall, and dominated by its twin centers, the castle and the cathedral.
